Cincinnati ยท scene guide

Cincinnati for collaborators.

Cincinnati's scene runs on two neighborhoods and a river. Over-the-Rhine and Northside hold the rooms where local bands play for free most nights, and Northern Kentucky across the Ohio holds a good share of the studios. The city is big enough to have every genre and small enough that the same few dozen players show up on everyone's records. Getting into that circle is most of the work.

Neighborhoods

Where the work happens.

  • 01

    Over-the-Rhine

MOTR Pub (1345 Main St) has had live music seven nights a week since 2010 and never charges a cover. It's the most reliable place in town to hear local bands on a weeknight. Across the street, its sister room, the Woodward Theater (1404 Main St), is where bands that outgrow MOTR's stage move next.

  • 02

    Northside

Northside Tavern (4163 Hamilton Ave) has free live music most nights and a year-round patio. The Comet, down the street, keeps a steady calendar. Northside is where you'll meet the garage, indie and roots players.

  • 03

    Clifton

Bogart's in Clifton has been the theater-sized stop for touring acts for decades, and Ludlow Garage books a seated downstairs room (Visit Cincy). Local openers on those bills are worth following.

Rooms

Where it gets recorded

Harmony Studio (1301 Monmouth Ave, by appointment) does production and recording and also teaches voice, guitar and violin. It suits singer-songwriters who want a producer to build the track. Candyland Recording Studio sits just across the river in Dayton, KY, and does recording, mixing and mastering in an analog-and-digital room. CincyMusic keeps a community directory of local studios that's worth checking. Confirm current details with each room, because older listings go stale. As everywhere, home rigs handle a big share of the beats and demos.

Union work. The Cincinnati Musicians' Association, AFM Local 1, covers orchestral, theater and recording-scale dates.

How it books

Sessions, features, shoots, shows

No-cover rooms mean bands play often and for little. The money is in private events, recording dates and features, and those get arranged in DMs that go cold. KollabMe keeps the whole job in one thread: match on genre and distance, agree the rate or split and the date on a card, and end with both people confirming it's done. KollabMe never holds the money.

On KollabMe

How the app works in Cincinnati.

"Local" is a 50-mile radius. That takes in Northern Kentucky (Covington, Newport, Florence), Hamilton, Middletown and most of the way to Dayton. Lexington is about 80 miles south on I-75 and Louisville about 100 miles southwest. Widen the radius when you want them in the deck.

What to look for here

  • Musicians who list your genre and have audio you can play on the card
  • Studios on both sides of the river in Spaces, with posted rates
  • Producers with confirmed completions on their KollabScore

Studios and venues are found in Spaces and receive requests; they are never in the swipe deck. The rate and the terms get agreed in the app and settle between the two of you. KollabMe never holds the money.

FAQ

Cincinnati FAQ

How do I find musicians in Cincinnati to start a band?

Spend a few weeknights at MOTR Pub and Northside Tavern, where the shows are free. On KollabMe, post a collab in the Feed and filter the deck by genre within 50 miles; each player's instruments show on the card.

Where are the recording studios near me in Cincinnati?

They're on both sides of the river. Look at Harmony Studio, Candyland in Dayton, KY, and the CincyMusic directory, or search KollabMe Spaces for rooms that post their rate.

Is there a musicians' union in Cincinnati?

Yes. The Cincinnati Musicians' Association is AFM Local 1.

Does KollabMe cover Northern Kentucky?

Yes. The radius is distance-based, not city-limited, so Covington, Newport and Florence are all "local" to Cincinnati.

Does KollabMe take a cut?

No. You agree the rate in the app and settle directly with each other.
